Crawford Catastrophe Services® has updated clients on a daily basis after Hurricane Irma passed through the Caribbean, Florida and the south eastern United States. (Re)insurers, corporates and policyholders have been advised to monitor Crawford’s Catastrophe Response web site for further information, with teams now being initially deployed from the group’s Atlanta Induction Centre which will transition to Jacksonville very shortly. Although less damaging than originally feared, Irma still generated substantial losses in Florida, with the Keys worst affected of all, Jacksonville enduring its worst flooding since 1864, storm surges affecting Charleston, SC and parts of Georgia left without power following damaging storm force winds, Crawford U.S. Property & Casualty CEO, Ken Tolson, said “Last month we set up an induction centre in Austin, TX after Harvey. We’ve done the same in Atlanta for Irma with our central induction centres forming the backbone of the Crawford Catastrophe response, from which we deploy hundreds of experts around the region. “In addition, Crawford has been able to call upon the WeGoLook® network of Lookers® which are being used to gauge the size and scope of loss in many areas. Finally, drones have been utilised on a wide basis, to help us survey damage in many of the more hard to reach areas. For assistance with Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Harvey or [...]

Broadspire® businesses around the world are promoting the benefits of rehabilitation case management, beginning with the United States where National Rehabilitation Awareness week begins on 17 September. In the spirit of its campaign, Broadspire is reminding clients and the market about some of the key reasons why insurers, employers and injured parties have increasingly chosen rehabilitation case management as their means to return to work, or just get back on their feet. “As one of the world’s most established rehab case management providers, Broadspire has an obligation to maintain awareness levels with businesses and the public,” says Deborah Edwards, head of rehabilitation, Broadspire UK. “If you take musculoskeletal injuries for example, these are responsible for up to 20% of UK employees’ absence from work. This generates an annual cost of long term sickness absence to the UK economy of £6.71bn. In addition, mental Illness and musculoskeletal problems are the top causes of long term sickness absence. Employees with access to Early Intervention Rehabilitation services have an absence period that is 16.6% shorter than those who do not.” In the U.S., the figures understandably dwarf those of other economies. 8.5 million at-work injuries annually at an estimated cost of approximately $250bn [...]

A new campaign launched this week, with Crawford & Company® helping to bring awareness and education on the importance of disaster preparedness. The MediaPlanet Disaster Prep & Recovery campaign featured in a major supplement in USA TODAY, focusing on how the general public, families and businesses can become better prepared to handle all types of disaster events. Ken Tolson, Crawford U.S. Property & Casualty CEO, was amongst the campaign’s contributors. He explained: “It’s great that a national publisher should bring such an important issue to people’s homes across the United States. The message from Crawford is clear: A defined business continuity plan, combined with proper insurance coverage, is essential in impacting successful recovery following a disaster.” Alongside Ken’s advice are the views of a wide range of celebrities including stars of big and small screens who have been supporting initiatives focused on making homes and families more resilient when disaster strikes. Actress Dakota Fanning spoke of her feelings as a ten year old after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005. She had been filming in the area just one year before. “As I was watching the news coverage from the safety of my home, I couldn’t help but wonder [...]

Broadspire® launches in Australia as workers’ compensation costs escalate

In February, Crawford® expanded its service portfolio in Australia to include workers’ compensation (WC) – a capability delivered through TPA solution Broadspire. Broadspire enters the Australian WC market at a time when the claims landscape is evolving fast. Across the country, insurers, corporations and governments could face claims disputes that pay out higher values and longer lifespans than in the past. In February, Western Australia’s McGowan Government approved the drafting of a new WC statute which seeks to replace the outdated Workers’ Compensation and Injury Management Act of 1981 with a modern Act that is clear, accessible and workable. Crucially, the new Act brings in some significant changes to WC claims exposures, notably implementing lifetime care and support arrangements for catastrophically injured workers. In the same month, a court in New South Wales set a new precedent by ruling that where death is not instantaneous – even if it follows not long after an injury – compensation is payable for both the injury and death, increasing the entitlement to compensation significantly. This is particularly important in NSW given that the State Government had already significantly increased benefits for workplace injuries and deaths in 2015. Meanwhile, medical costs continue to rise, [...]

Trusted partners are priceless in art and antiques claims

With the value of precious items on the rise, the steps insurers and policyholders take both pre-loss and post-loss can have a significant impact on claims performance. By Richard Wakeham, UK Head of Private Clients, Crawford & Company® In May, the Rockefeller family’s art collection could be the first to exceed $1bn at auction. If this huge landmark is indeed breached, it may not be for the last time. And it’s not just art valuations that are hot at the moment. Gemstones and jewelry are also realizing very high prices. As the value of art, antiques and other precious items continues to rise, so do claims values. Before an item or collection is insured, it should be accurately surveyed and valued – not just once, but on a regular basis to reflect current market movements. Many art pieces or collections are insured on a valued basis, so pre-loss valuations are vital, particularly in the event of a total loss. Keeping sums insured up to date makes insurers’ and adjusters’ jobs much easier. It also makes the policyholder think about what they have acquired and disposed of, allowing them to prioritize and optimize their risk management. Ideally, owners should revalue their [...]

Lead the way

Drew Povey, inspirational headteacher, from Channel 4’s ‘Educating Greater Manchester’ joined the Crawford UK team at BIBA 2018 to discuss leadership at a time of change for the insurance industry. The insurance industry is undergoing a transitional period more pronounced than any previously experienced. Expanding client demands, increasing regulatory burdens, the rise of disruptive technologies and a growing number of external competitors are placing companies under extreme strain. During any transition, effective leadership is paramount; yet the insurance sector has long recognised that there are deficiencies in its approach to attracting new talent to the industry, reflected in a sluggish pipeline of potential leaders of the future at all levels. “Being able to manage the degree of uncertainty faced not only by the insurance industry but virtually every other sector, requires strong and effective leadership,” says Clive Nicholls, president, UK & Ireland at Crawford. “Yet we need to evolve our approach if we are to lead effectively through this period of change.” For Nicholls, leadership encompasses multiple functions. “Leaders at all levels within an organisation have the ability to create and promote a clear vision of the future that is recognised and accepted by all,” he believes. “That vision helps to [...]

Testing Crawford’s Global Reach

We often shout about how far and wide we can reach with our global network of adjusters; but this past month that assertion was really put to the test. In order to assess a claim, Leanne Johnson – Darwin Branch Manager, had to make the long trip to the remote Australian territory, Christmas Island. Spectacularly beautiful and remote, Christmas Island has a small local population of around 800 people, with the remaining residents comprising of fly-in fly-out workers and detainees at the infamous Detention Centre. Life on the island can be isolated with a general lack of services, and deliveries to the island are only made every eight weeks (and can be delayed up to three months). Travelling to the island was the first hurdle. Leanne had to make the trip from Darwin to Perth on a Monday and then on to Christmas Island on the Tuesday, catching a flight that only goes to the island from mainland Australia once a week. This also meant that Leanne had to remain on the island until Saturday, flying back into Darwin on Sunday on the only flight out. Whilst on the island, Leanne inspected two further claims for organisations that supply vital [...]

May 2018 – Mental Health Awareness campaigns in the UK and US Mental health is an increasingly challenging social and economic issue and can affect people from all walks of life. Throughout May, both the UK and US drew attention to this growing issue with Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK 1(4-20 May 2018) and Mental Health Awareness month in the US. Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health problems. This year, the Mental Health Foundation in the UK is focussed in particular on stress. Research has shown that two-thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetime and stress is a key contributor. By confronting stress, we can go a long way to tackling mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and, in some instances, self-harm and suicide (www.mentalhealth.org.uk). In the US, where as many as 1 in 5 adults has a mental health condition, Mental Health America (MHA) raised awareness about the connection between physical and mental health, with their campaign Fitness #4Mind4Bod. This campaign encouraged a healthier lifestyle to promote better mental wellbeing www.mentalhealthamerica.net/May and the organisation offered a toolkit and various positive suggestions for improving wellbeing. By 2030, it is [...]
